The Columbian Exchange was a very important part of the Global Age. The Columbian exchange was the trade of goods crops, food, technology, diseases between the New World (Americas) and the Old World (Europe). "Soon after 1492, sailors inadvertently introduced these diseases- including smallpox, measles, mumps, whooping cough, influenza, chicken pox , and typhus - to the Americas. People who lived in Afro-Eurasia had developed some immunities to these diseases because they had long existed among most Afro-Eurasian populations. " (Mcneill, J.R. "The Columbian Exchange."). This quote shows us how just through trade, a lot of damage could be done. Food was also a major thing that was traded between Europe and the Americas. From Europe, sailors brought things like coffee, rice, wheat, and sugarcane to America. In return, the Europeans got corn, cotton, rubber, tobacco and much more. (Columbus Daily Activity Set. "The Columbian Exchange: An Overview."). New and improved technology/institutions was valuable to the New World more so than the Old World. The Europeans brought over new ideas about an alphabet, farming tools, and weaponry. The plow was one of most beneficial tools the Americans learned about from the Europeans. This helped with farming and crops. Knives were essential to the Europeans during warfare and after they were brought over, they were essential to the Americans, as well. The Americans found that knives were more effective than bows and arrows for hunting. (Gray, Sarah, Cory Malone, Katie Ryan, Sean Ross. "The Columbian Exchange."). Overall, the Columbian exchange was very beneficial for both the Old and the New World.
The effect of the Columbian Exchange was that it drastically changed Europe's economy to make it better. From all of the income they got more money so they became richer. Disease also came with the Columbian Exchange so disease was spreading which was a negative of this exchange. However, both the New and the Old World were getting new goods and foods that helped them, this trade of goods from the New World also helped bring the goods from the New World all around to the places where Europe traded with. While people were in the New World mercantilism was beginning to become popular. Mercantilism is when you start a colony to make money for the mother country. To do this capitalism and joint stock were invented to give the people rights and investing. This also made a balance of trade, however this led to the richer getting richer and the poorer getting poorer. Which in most cases leads to revolt and rebel. (Stabile, Notes on Columbian Exchange).
